Technology: Mirror Lets You Try on Virtual Eyeglasses

Virtual mirror from Smashing Ideas can help you choose from 10,000 frame styles without having to physically try them on

Online shopping just got much more real, thanks to some near-perfect smart mirror technology that lets you try on virtual eyeglasses without leaving home. This technology, brought to you by Smashing Ideas, allows you to use an app on your smartphone or tablet to try on various styles of sunglasses. This isn’t the only kind of software to attempt this, but it’s by far the best  when it comes to accuracy.
Using the forward camera, you can choose from 10,000 frame styles, try them on with a tap of the finger, and see exactly what they would look like perched on your nose. You can even move with the virtual eyeglasses, seeing how the pair looks from every angle.

This technology could be huge for both Smashing Ideas and eyewear companies around the world. Imagine what would happen if Warby Parker, one of the worlds largest spectacles companies, got ahold of it. It could significantly boost profit margins for the eye wear industry in general.

Smashing isn’t the only company to harness this technology to create an incredible smart mirror experience. The labs at Panasonic are now talking about a virtual smart mirror that can help you to see all of your flaws and how to improve them.

The technology works using a special set of cameras that are programmed to analyze your face in order to recommend makeup, clothing, hairstyles, and even teeth whitening products, catered to suit the person standing in front of the mirror. This technology would fit perfectly with department stores looking to up their sales of facial enhancing products.

The program not only makes suggestions for how to improve a flaw, but it also shows you what a product or article would look like on you. When you need an age defying cream, it will show you specific results of using that cream for your face. When you want to see what a pair of Christian Dior sunglasses looks like on you rather than on a supermodel, it will show you the results. You can even see what it might look like if you chopped your hair to a bob or grew a goatee.

The smart mirror is still in the preliminary stages, but Panasonic has shown demos of this technology first at IFA in Berlin last year, and then another demo at the 2015 CES conference.

Tech geniuses and marketers alike expect both of these smart mirrors to have impressive results. When a consumer sees exactly what a product can do for them in real-time, it’s likely to make all the difference in their shopping decisions, and change the online experience to something we’re all a little more familiar with.
