Jolla Starts Taking Pre-Orders For Its Sailfish OS Based Tablet

Jolla, a Finland-based company formed by ex-Nokia employees, has started taking pre-orders for its much anticipated Jolla Tablet in India, USA, Norway, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong and all EU countries. Being a small company with a limited budget, the company went to crowdsourcing platform Indiegogo to get funding for its tablet.

At the website, Jolla was seeking $380,000 (roughly GHS. 1,618,800), which to its own surprise, was successfully funded in roughly 2 hours. It hit $1 million in funding within 48 hours, and shortly after started introducing stretch goals that would add new features. The original campaign was 480 percent funded in December.

The Jolla tablet will feature a 7.85-inch display with a resolution of 2048×1536 pixels density of 330ppi. It will be powered by a 64-bit 1.8GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3735F chipset coupled with Intel HD Graphics GPU coupled with 2GB RAM. The tablet comes in 32GB and 64GB storage variants, with both offering support for microSD card (up to 128GB) for expansion.

It measures 203x137x8.3mm and weighs 384 grams and is backed by a 4450mAh battery. The tablet also sports a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front camera. On the connectivity front, it supports Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, Micro-USB, 3.5mm audio jack, and A-GPS/ GPS. The Jolla Tablet features an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, gyroscope, digital compass, and hall sensor.

Most importantly, the device runs on Sailfish OS 2.0. Sailfish OS is based on Meego, a Linux-based mobile operating system that Nokia had been working on. It was later put on hold as it wanted to focus on Windows phones.

The Jolla tablet variants of 32GB and 64GB are priced at EUR 267 (approx. GHS. 1317) and EUR 299 (approx. GHS. 1475) respectively and can be now pre-ordered directly from the company’s website.
