To get an Intel Xeon-powered machine that boasts durability and security features you need to turn to custom machines manufactured by boutique firms as getting these machines from a mainstream consumer brand is difficult. This changes today as Lenovo has braved into Intel Skylake Xeon processor territory.
The Chinese company announced on Monday that its new mobile workstations will be outfitted with Intel’s newest CPU, Skylake. The 6th-generation chip is not the only thing that the new Lenovo ThinkPad P50 and P70 boast.
Along with the Intel Xeon E3-1500M v5, Lenovo pitched in 64GB DDR4 RAM, Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1, PCIe SSD performance and a Quadro GPU supplied by Nvidia. Detailed information about Intel’s Skylake is still hush hush but that will change at the Intel Developer Forum on August 18.
Intel has its Core i7 processor for its notebook computing and we will see that lineup continue with the Skylake architecture as well but this is the first time the chip giant is deploying Xeon processors for notebook computing. The Xeon E3-1500M v5 Processors will utilize Intel’s Skylake 14nm architecture and will bring enterprise-friendly features such as error-correcting code memory along with enhanced security courtesy to the vPro technology.
The ThinkPad P50 is the lighter of the two and Lenovo claims it’s in fact the thinnest model in its mobile workstation. The P50 houses a 15.6-inch 4K display while the P70 has a 17-inch screen and is aimed at professionals. The Intel Xeon processors make these notebooks the ideal choice for engineers and even designers and given its MIL-SPEC test, it can handle the rough wear and tear on-the-go as well.
Color calibration on the two machines is also what Lenovo is quite proud of and with 1TB storage and Windows 10 out-of-the box the P50 will retail at $1,599 while the P70 will cost $1,999 starting in Q4 2015.
